Butylene Glycol
Butylene glycol is a humectant and solvent used in countless serums, lotions, and cleansers. It helps hold moisture, dissolve other ingredients, and give a formula a smooth, lightweight feel.

What Is It?
Butylene glycol belongs to a group of ingredients called glycols. In chemistry it is considered an alcohol, but it is not the same kind of fast-evaporating, potentially drying alcohol people usually mean when they see “alcohol” on a label. It can be manufactured from conventional raw materials or through bio-based processes, while still appearing under the same INCI name.
What Does It Do?
Butylene glycol helps the skin hold water and can make a product spread more easily. It also works as a solvent, helping other ingredients remain evenly distributed instead of collecting or crystallizing in the bottle. It is usually there to make the entire formula work and feel better, not to perform a dramatic treatment on its own. The chemical-sounding name is not evidence that a finished product is harsh or unsafe.
Formulation Notes
It is commonly used in serums, toners, creams, masks, cleansers, and hair products. Formulators may combine it with glycerin and other moisturizers to improve hydration without creating too much stickiness. It can support a preservation system, but it is not a complete preservative by itself.
